Painter Carolyn Burt!
Born and raised in Tacoma, Washington, Carolyn grew up appreciating the natural beauty of our world. She received her B.A. and M.Ed. from the University of Puget Sound where she studied art, French, and Education Administration. Spending a year in France, she attended the Universite’ de Rennes and the Ecole des Beaux Arts where she studied French language, etching, painting, and drawing, and design. Travelling around Europe and seeing the Masters enriched her appreciation for the arts.
She is eclectic and versatile in her work. She loves the detail and contrast of the pen and ink drawings. The flow and transparency of watercolor and the depicting the reflections and light as it plays upon the subject are also exciting to her. Yet, painting in acrylics, both mountain and urban scenes lets her really feel the subject, providing texture and depth. Photography was a natural development as she began to take reference photos for painting; she found that the photograph often captured the mood and feeling of the subject best.
After a long hiatus from personal art, and retiring from 24 years teaching, she is back doing what she loves most. While many of her subjects are local scenes, she also enjoys pulling ideas from her travels. She prefers to depict in a more impressionistic style the beauty of our environment, but who knows where she may go from here. She loves experimenting. Her most recent series, “Boogie, Blues,… and all that Jazz” was inspired by a trip to Memphis and the International Blues Challenge.
Burt’s work has won several awards in juried art shows including being one of 13 finalists in the world-wide Easter Seal design contest. Her paintings and drawings may be found in private collections in France, Austria, Scotland, Japan, as well as the United States.
